Crossing Delancey
A romantic comedy by playwright Susan Sandler
Isabelle (Izzy) Grossman is a thirtysomething bookstore clerk who lives in the Upper West Side of New York. Every Sunday, she crosses Delancey to the Lower East End to visit her Bubbie. Izzy, straddles both the sophisticated literary and traditional Jewish worlds, has difficulty reconciling the two.
Izzy fall for book author Tyler Moss who comes in to her bookstore to check on the sales of his latest novel. He at first ignores then tries to woos the naive Izzy.
Meanwhile her Bubbie is busy trying to find her a match. She seeks the aid of a matchemaker, Hannah . Hannah introduces Sam, the local pickle vendor, to Izzy. Izzy, of course, is disgusted by the whole idea. Sam is just not good enough for her exciting literary life, having nothing in common with her. Or so it seems. Sam persists, of course, and when left alone in the room together, Sam is downright charming. He recounts a story about his friend who always wore a brown cap that hid his face. One gusty day, it flew off his head while crossing Delancey Street and then a truck crushes it. Sam buys his friend a new fedora and by the next day, tells Sam he has a new bride.
Izzy is torn between two men and two worlds. In the end it all works out.
